Two varieties of salt-alkali tolerant rice in Lianyungang achieved new highs in yield testing

Salt alkali tolerant rice refers to a type of rice variety that can grow in saline alkali soil with a salt (alkali) concentration of more than 0.3% and can yield over 300 kilograms per mu. In order to grasp the yield levels of different rice varieties planted in saline alkali soil and further optimize the rice breeding technology, the Municipal Academy of Agricultural Sciences has recently conducted on-site production tests on salt alkali tolerant rice variety with better palatability called ¡°Lian Jian No.15¡± and the salt alkali tolerant hybrid indica variety ¡°Lian Liangyou 6493¡±. After testing, the yield of each variety reached over 500 kilograms per mu, both setting new highs.

The Rice Department of the Municipal Academy of Agricultural Sciences invited crop cultivation experts from the city, counties and districts to conduct small-scale trial field yield acceptance tests on the salt alkali tolerant rice lines¡ª¡ª ¡°Lian Jian No. 15¡± and ¡°Lian Liangyou 6493¡± selected by the rice breeding team of the Municipal Academy of Agricultural Sciences. ¡°Salt alkali tolerant rice refers to a type of rice variety that can grow in saline alkali soil with a salt (alkali) concentration of more than 0.3% and can produce over 300 kilograms per mu. We have been cultivating new salt tolerant rice at the Qingkou Salt Tolerant Plant Experimental Base for more than ten years, and every year we test their production.¡± Wang, Vice President of the Municipal Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that this test production was located at the Qingkou Salt Alkali Tolerant R&D Experimental Base, with a soil salt content of 6 ¡ë, and the salinity of irrigation water during the entire growth period of rice materials tested is 3 ¡ë. The tested product lines have been cultivated and screened for over 8 years, and they are salt alkali tolerant rice varieties (lines) with excellent comprehensive traits.

At the production testing site on the same day, 10 staffs including production testing experts and researchers entered the experimental field. They were divided into two groups and harvested salt alkali tolerant rice ¡°Lian Jian No. 15¡± and ¡°Lian Liangyou 6493¡±. The staff then moved the two tested rice samples to the threshing machine for threshing, bagged them separately, weighed them one by one, and recorded their weight. Subsequently, the water content and impurity rate were calculated.

After production testing, experts believe that both ¡°Lian Jian No. 15¡± and ¡°Lian Liangyou 6493¡± exhibit strong salt tolerance, high yield and other excellent traits. Liu Yan, Director of the Rice Department, said, ¡°The yield per mu of ¡®Lian Jian No. 15¡¯ reached 528.6 kilograms, and the yield per mu of ¡®Lian Liangyou 6493¡¯ reached 581.53 kilograms, both of which increased by more than 3% compared to last year. This result shows that our scientific research work has made new breakthroughs. We screened materials from generation to generation in order to find materials and varieties that are salt tolerant, high yielding, high-quality and resistant to pests and diseases. Especially with regard to salt tolerance, we need to explore ground-breaking germplasm resource and effective genes with better resistance in high salinity conditions.¡±

It is reported that the ¡°Lian Jian No. 15¡± project will enter the salt alkali tolerance production trial of Jiangsu Province in the later stage.
