Lianyungang Port Selected as One of Top 100 Global Container Ports in 2022

From: Lianyungang Daily Updated: 2023-08-05 11:55

Recently, the authoritative global shipping media, Lloyd's Daily, announced the 2022 ranking of the top 100 global container ports, with 27 Chinese ports on the list. Among them, Lianyungang Port ranks 33rd, an increase of 3 places compared to 2021. According to statistics, in 2022, Lianyungang Port completed a total cargo throughput of about 300 million tons, an increase of 8.3% year-on-year. Among them, the container throughput reached 5.568 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 10.6%, ranking 13th and 10th among domestic coastal ports (excluding inland waterways), respectively.

Yesterday, at the container terminal of Lianyungang Port, several large cargo ships docked on the shore, and cranes were busy unloading cargo from the ships, creating a bustling scene. The unique geographical location has laid a good foundation for the development of container transportation in the port. It is integrated into the Yangtze River Delta in the south, connected to in the north, facing Japan and South Korea across the sea to the east, and connected to Central Asia and Europe to the west through the New Eurasian Continental Bridge. Lianyungang Port is located at a hub point for communication between east and west, as well as land sea intersection. As an important sea port and transit transportation channel along the Longhai-Lanxin Line and even in Central Asia, an important component of the northern wing of the Shanghai International Shipping Center, and a core member of Jiangsu Coastal Port Group, Lianyungang Port has opened 86 container routes to the world.

Container routes connect 13 sea-rail intermodal transportation channels and the inland river ports of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui. International trains from Lianyungang directly reach major stations in Central Asia, while domestic trains cover major node cities along the New Eurasian Continental Bridge, creating a multimodal transportation brand of "road-rail-water" and "sea-river". In 2022, the port's sea-rail intermodal transportation volume completed 790000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 13.6%, and the sea-river intermodal transportation volume completed 18.6 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.8%.

On the large screen of the digital dispatch center of the logistics cooperation base between China and Kazakhstan (Lianyungang), various data such as the cumulative arrival and departure volume of Sino-EuroTrains, the number of inbound and outbound containers, and the volume of international trains are clearly visible. Under the scorching sun, several railway lines pass through the container yard, and workers are preparing to lift and depart the containers. The base mainly engages in international multimodal transportation, unpacking and shipping, warehousing and other international cargo transportation businesses. The goods exported or transitioned through Sino-Euro trains mainly include daily necessities, electronic products, old and new cars, construction materials and etc. From January to June, Sino-Euro Trains (Lianyungang) completed a total of 383 trains, with a total transportation volume of 15700 vehicles, and added new types of return cargo such as chrysotile asbestos, gold concentrate and carbon black.

This year, Lianyungang Port has made further efforts and breakthroughs in improving transportation service capacity, accelerating the construction of container trunk ports, optimizing the layout of foreign trade route networks, ensuring the opening of 12 new routes within the year, and promoting a 5.5% increase in port throughput and a 9% increase in container traffic volume. In terms of specific measures, we will continue to deepen cooperation with Shanghai Port Group, open up a "land to water" channel in northern Jiangsu, and increase the full warehouse rate of "Lianshen Express". We will continuously promote the construction of the benchmark demonstration project for the new Eurasian land-sea intermodal transportation channel built by Lianxu, continuously promote the adjustment and optimization of transportation structure, actively strive for railway shipping plans and promote the stable operation of Sino-Euro freight trains. The annual sea-river intermodal transportation volume is guaranteed to reach 18 million tons, creating the largest sea outlet in northern Jiangsu as well as regions like Shandong, Henan and Anhu.

In the future, Lianyungang Port will promote the total number of liner routes to 120, and the multimodal transportation volume to exceed 1.5 million TEUs. It will build a logistic channel that connects the Pacific Rim to the east, connects the Eurasian inland to the west, connects the north and south ports along the coast, and connects Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui through inland rivers. By 2025, it will build a Great Eastern Port with a throughput of over 400 million tons.
