Lianyungang Port seized opportunities to expand cargo sources in the first quarter

On April 6th, the author learned from Lianyungang Port that in the first quarter, the port achieved a year-on-year increase of 6.51% in cargo throughput, with container throughput increasing by 8.15% year-on-year. Both throughput and container volume achieved “double growth”, delivering “a strong start” to the year.

From the beginning, it was a decisive battle. Looking back at the first quarter, especially in January and February, due to multiple unfavorable factors such as the continued downturn in the cargo market and cold and snowy weather, port production faced unprecedented challenges. Despite these adverse effects, Lianyungang Port seized opportunities, adhering to the market strategy of “shipping routes bring cargo sources, and cargo sources stabilize shipping routes”, actively expanding new cargo sources and creating a new situation for port production. By optimizing diversified, professional, and unique agency services, the port focused on enhancing customer stickiness and expanding market share.

New routes and trains were added. Relying on its location and hinterland advantages, shipping and train routes continued to expand, further optimizing the port's route network and collection and distribution system, amplifying the combined efficiency of multimodal transport, and strengthening cooperation with shipping companies to strive for more direct routes. The efficiency of the internal market continued to increase, and the ability to give back gradually emerged. In January, the "Lianyungang-Xuzhou" inland waterway route successfully made its maiden voyage. In February, the "China Lianyungang Port - Cambodia's Seven Star Bay International Port" direct shipping route successfully made its maiden voyage, successfully opening up a corridor for agricultural products between China and Cambodia, and achieving new results in the joint construction of the "Belt and Road". In March, the "Dunhuang-Lianyungang-Bangkok" rail-water combined transport train successfully departed for the first time.

Enhanced Efficiency of Sea-River Combined Transport: Focusing on the strategy of "accelerating the expansion of sea-river combined transport business", Lianyungang Port relies on the layout of "one port with four districts" to deeply explore the cargo source market of the "two routes". By expanding the "inter-port alliance friend circle", optimizing internal production organization, and jointly promoting full-service logistics services, the port attracts goods from Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui to be transferred or shipped via Lianyungang. Data shows that the throughput of sea-river combined transport at Lianyungang Port increased by 10.2% year-on-year in the first quarter, achieving three consecutive months of growth. Despite unfavorable factors such as major repairs to the ship lock, navigation channel closures during the flood season, and limited port berths and rear yards, Xin Yun Tai Company achieved an excellent performance with a 6.5% year-on-year increase in sea-river combined transport volume and a 36.3% year-on-year increase in container throughput in the first quarter. Guanhe Port bravely expands the market. Under the premise of ensuring the stability of traditional cargo types, it has developed cargo sources featured with “three innovations” such as iron ore, coal, wood, and fertilizer. In the first quarter, the grocery handling volume increased by 48.16% year-on-year, setting a record high.

In the next step, Lianyungang Port will continue to anchor the goal of "10 million TEUs, Oriental Grand Port", increase benchmark demonstration features and advantages, build a good land-sea conversion hub, and smooth land-sea transportation channels. With the courage to dare to do and dare to innovate, the port will show new achievements as a strong fulcrum in the construction of the "Belt and Road" intersection, achieving better and more excellent results in increasing port volume and efficiency.
